Inventory policy for products with short life cycles

چکیده
The unanticipated shortening of a product’s life cycle can have a dramatic effect on inventory costs. Where the cause is physical decay or an unexpected decline in demand, producers can quickly find themselves quickly holding inventory that has degraded value or no value at all. In this research, we propose that an inventory system with this characteristic can be modeled as a Markov Process with the state defined in terms of product value. Different inventory control policies can then be modeled and compared based on expected cost. Simple numerical examples are included to illustrate implementation.

Strategic Inventory Placement in Supply Chains: Nonstationary Demand
T life cycle of new products is becoming shorter and shorter in all markets. For electronic products, life cycles are measured in units of months, with 6to 12-month life cycles being common. Given these short product life cycles, product demand is increasingly difficult to forecast. Furthermore, demand is never really stationary because the demand rate evolves over the life of the product. In t...

متن کاملManaging Perishable Inventory
This article discusses inventory management of perishable items, including the differences between inventory models that consider items’ perishability and the standard models that ignore this issue. We hope that this article will help fostering the interest of students and researchers in inventory control of perishable items, and ultimately help improving the inventory control of perishable ite...
متن کاملInventory Management of a Fast-Fashion Retail Network
Working in collaboration with Spain-based retailer Zara, we address the problem of distributing over time a limited amount of inventory across all the stores in a fast-fashion retail network. Challenges specific to that environment include very short product life-cycles, and store policies whereby a reference is removed from display whenever one of its key sizes stocks out. We first formulate a...

We study a finite-horizon lost-sales inventory model. The demand distribution is unknown and is dynamically updated based on the previous sales data in a Bayesian fashion. We derive a samplepath representation of the first order optimality condition, which characterizes the key tradeoff of the problem. The expression allows us to see why the computation of the optimal policy is difficult and wh...
